Consultant Spotlight - Sharon Huizinga

Sharon Huizinga lives in Michigan with Tom, her husband of 13 years, and their four children. They both grew up in Connecticut, met at church, and got to know each other better in college at Western Connecticut State University. Sharon graduated with her bachelor's degree just a few weeks before she and Tom married in 2006. She went on to teach second, fourth, and fifth grades in Christian schools.

During this time, Tom had been teaching a homeschooled boy to play guitar in his home and was impressed to see first-hand how a large homeschooling family “did life.” Then, at a teacher's conference, Sharon saw the BJU Press curriculum at a little booth which “just so happened” to have a few brochures on their homeschool materials and distance learning classes. A lightbulb went on, and the Lord began to open her heart to the possibility of homeschooling their own children one day.

Shortly after their first son was born in 2009, the Lord led Sharon and Tom to move from Connecticut all the way to the Lake Michigan shoreline in West Michigan. They have been living there for ten years. Their children, 3 boys, and a girl, are 9,7,4 and 1. They have been homeschooled right from the start.

When she isn’t facilitating her children's education or keeping her home, she enjoys reading, photography, home design, and blogging. She and two of her children have ADHD, so she understands managing a home and homeschooling a large family with that challenge. She is passionate about sharing what helps her to be successful. Sharon finds what works best for her children in everyday life and education, and enjoys passing those tips along to other parents.

A few years ago, Sharon decided that sharing her love of the BJU Press Homeschool curriculum would be a great way to serve the Lord and the homeschooling community. She has experience with other popular Christian school curricula which gives her a unique perspective of the strengths that BJU Press Homeschool has to offer. She and her husband are impressed with the ease of use of the curriculum, especially using distance learning, the strong biblical worldview that is woven throughout each subject, the excellent critical thinking skills her children are using, and the love of learning that is developing in all of them.

Sharon loves getting to know other homeschoolers, having the privilege of helping them on their homeschool journeys, and praying with and for them. She understands the need to keep costs low and loves to find the best deals for her customers.
