Find JOY!

It’s that time of year….curriculum has arrived, supplies have been purchased, and the school start date has been set. As exciting as that all is, we can also find stress during this time too. Whether it is a reluctant learner, new curriculum and the learning curve that goes with it, or trying to shift from a summer schedule to a school schedule, it can no doubt create extra stress.

I must admit, it is easy for me to get bogged down in feeling the need to organize the school stuff perfectly, following a schedule precisely, and planning exactly how the year should go. I have to remember that this is not what God intended for me. He has called my husband and me to love our children, teach our children, and help them grow in the Word and love of the Lord. It is my human nature to control and overplan that can ultimately derail the joy in our homeschooling journey.

As my family juggles preparing for school amidst an already crazy sports schedule, I have been blessed with a gentle reminder and nudging from the Lord. FIND JOY. That is what my heart is telling me. FIND JOY. That is what God is whispering in my ear. And that is exactly what I needed to hear today.

I go into this school year knowing there will be moments of chaos, stress, and frustration. I know because those experiences have occurred every year we have homeschooled. Some were natural, and some I probably created with my need for things to be perfect. I’ve been working on finding a balance with that. However, I also go into this school year knowing that there will be an abundance of moments filled with learning, laughter and incredible joy. And it’s that joy that keeps my family moving forward. It’s that joy that makes the not so picture perfect days doable. It’s that joy that makes me feel like I can accomplish anything with my children. And it’s that joy I intentionally seek each day.

You see, this season of life—homeschooling our children—is fleeting. It will pass quickly. Our children will grow right before our eyes in ways and at speeds we didn’t expect. Our children will learn not just from books, but from us. They will notice and be positively impacted, if we lived in joy, much more than how well mom organized it all. As you begin or already have begun your school year, I hope you hear the whisper and feel the gentle nudging to FIND JOY.
